In accordance with California Ed Code, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) defines a gifted and talented student as one who exhibits excellence or the capacity for excellence far beyond that of their chronological peers in one or more gifted/talented categories.

Parents interested in identifying a student as gifted should contact their child's school and meet with the school site GATE coordinator (Ms. Kaidin) to learn about the identification process

Referral Process:

During the first month of school,  after students have a chance to settle in, Reed MS will being identifying which students might qualify for GATE Intellectual and arts assessment. Anyone (parents, teachers, friend, self-referral, etc.) may recommend a student for consideration, but a school screening panel (which includes administrators, teachers, and other LAUSD school certificated personnel) will evaluate the student's qualification to make a final decision on who should be submitted for testing. Recommendations must be supported by school records. The screening process and recommendation must be documented prior to obtaining the required parent consent and completing the referral. If a student is selected for assessment, we require a parent consent form be signed before the process can continue as it is illegal to administer an intelligence test or an arts evaluation without parent permission.

Intellectual Assessments:

After we submit the paperwork, a district psychologist is assigned to administer the test. It can take time for this process as there is often a backlog. Once testing is completed, it has generally taken me another 1-2 months to get the results, so do not be frustrated if it takes some time before you receive results.
PLEASE NOTE: Students will be tested in the order in which they were referred.

Arts Assessments:

After we submit the paperwork, the district GATE program will contact families directly with the details of the GATE test. (This is NOT done through the school!) If you do not hear from the district within 10 days before the exam date, please contact Ms. Kaidin, the GATE coordinator at Reed. Please note that in some cases, arts evaluations made be deferred to the next testing date because of the number of applicants exceeded the testing capacity.

Policy

LAUSD Board of Education has adopted a plan for Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), which includes District policies and procedures for identifying gifted learners in seven categories. The District’s policies and procedures for gifted/talented identification are in accordance with California State requirements and the District’s agreement with the Office for Civil Rights.

Parent Consent

A Parent Consent for Assessment and Program Placement must be obtained, signed and returned to the referring school. Recommendations must be supported by school records. The screening process and recommendation must be documented prior to obtaining the required parent consent and completing the referral.

Please Note: The referral must be screened and the recommendation to continue the identification process must be made by LAUSD school certificated personnel.
