Humanities Academy

“The Humanities Academy- Where Creative Minds Meet!”
Our Mission:
The Humanities Academy is renowned for many reasons! For nearly two decades we have been Walter Reed’s original Smaller Learning Community, and our teachers work as a cohesive unit in order to ensure your student’s growth and success. We believe there is a creative core inside each student, and that this creativity can help him or her flourish in all subjects. If your child is self-motivated, compassionate, a creative thinker, a team player and thinks outside the box, Humanities would be a great fit.

We, as team teachers, foster both kindness and a growth mindset by explicitly teaching these critical topics. Our academic curriculum is infused with art, science, culture, language, philosophy, and original expression. Much of our learning is cross-curricular projects including: engineering projects, historical fiction projects, math journal writing, science labs and experiments (even a pig heart dissection!), scale drawings, creative writing, social/emotional learning, and a Medieval Faire. You will find these types of projects and others in the Humanities Academy.

A Humanities Student Is…
Creative - Students in the Humanities Academy enjoy expressing themselves through many different mediums. In class students are challenged to solve problems in unique ways, write from different perspectives, and create and express their knowledge through both visual, performing and fine arts.
Collaborative - The Humanities program promotes collaborative learning. Students work together on projects, engage in debates, and work together to problem solve in class.
Compassionate- Humanities students are compassionate about the Human experience, the world around them and their work. They are Humanitarians and concerned with making the world a better place. How do the decisions we make today make tomorrow a better place is a question a Humanities student would ask.
One Who Thinks Outside the Box- An important part of the Humanities student is the ability to think outside the box, to look at things through a unique lens. Humanities students go above and beyond in the ability to find a different way of analyzing the world around them.

Enrichments & More:
At our “Reed’s Got Talent” event, Humanities students get real life experience while working all aspects of a live show. Our Humanities students, alone, are responsible for the planning and execution of this large scale, annual production.

Although field trips vary annually, we work diligently to secure numerous real world experiences for our students. Some of those include but are not limited to trips to The Getty, LACMA, Skirball, The LA Arboretum, and The Science Center, The Natural History Museum, The Museum of Tolerance and Pali Institute.

All enrichments are open to students from all academies. Click the link for a complete list of enrichments.
Typically, you will find Humanities students in Show Choir, Choir, Jazz Band, Band, Orchestra, Art and Spanish.

Humanities is an academy that is overflowing with ideas, energy, creativity and a love for learning. We believe Education is an ART!
