STEAM Academy
Welcome to the S.T.E.A.M. Academy - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics! |
Imagine.Design.Create.Innovate
Our Mission:
In the STEAM academy, we seek to nurture our students’ natural curiosity by designing problem-based learning activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. This SLC blends the use of one-to-one technology with inquiry based, hands-on curricula. Students work collaboratively to actively seek out information. Students learn skills that emphasize research and design to produce deliverables, which prepares them to develop the skills needed to be ready for the world - to thrive in college, career, and life.
Why STEAM?
The skills taught in the STEAM academy at Walter Reed Middle School are vital for success in the 21st century and critical to our collective future. Every job, even the ones you wouldn’t expect, will require at least basic STEAM skills. Research shows that these skills are transferable and needed in every job sector.
Students in this academy will engage in a variety of activities throughout the curriculum including authentic problem solving, collaborative learning, communication, creativity, digital literacy and information literacy. By using design thinking to complete project-based and hands-on activities, our students will develop the skills needed to propel them into the future.
A STEAM Academy Student is…
"Am I a STEAM student?"
You are a STEAM student if...
You love solving problems!
You love to take things apart, strategize, and build new things!
You love to design and create new ideas!
Your unique talents allow you to persevere and find unique solutions for challenging situations!
Enrichments & More:
STEAM offers a range of enrichment classes that foster interest in various arts and sciences. Walter Reed offers courses in Engineering, Makerspace, Robotics, and Technical Drawing. Students enjoy collaboration, innovation, and creativity, using problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to showcase their work.
All enrichments are open to students from all academies. Click the link for a complete list of enrichments.
Field trips (both on and off campus) provide real world connections to our curricula. Past field trips have included: NHM Mobile Museum, Petersen Automotive Museum, The Discovery Center, The Getty Center, and The Getty Villa.
Field trips and enrichments vary annually, but we are committed to ensuring our students have opportunities to engage in these kinds of hands-on learning experiences.
