Student Survey Results / FAQ

More than 900 students responded to our Phone-Free School Day survey. You asked questions, and expressed concerns. Here are your top comments with our responses.

Q: Will we have to wait in lines to enter and exit?

A: Once we get used to the process, entry and exit won’t take any longer than it does now. It only takes a few seconds to open the pouch at the end of the day. Students will do it themselves.

Q: Where will my phone and pouch be during the school day? Will it be safe?
A: Students will keep their phone in their locked pouch, in their backpack or locker all day. Students will take their pouches home with them at night and return to school with them every day.

Q: How will I reach my parents in an emergency?

A: In an emergency, the school will communicate with parents. If we feel it’s important for students to communicate directly with their parents, we will unlock student pouches.

Q: What if we have Zero Period?

A: Zero Period students will lock their phones in their pouches as they enter for Zero Period.

Q: Why can’t YS students have their phones?
A: Phones will be in locked pouches while students are on campus, including during after school programs.

Q: What if a student has a medical condition that they need the phone?

A: We will look at individual situations and come up with solutions that make sense for each student.

Q: What if I don’t have a phone?

A: Students without phones will be issued a pouch with a special label indicating they do not have a phone.

Q: How much is the replacement fee if my pouch is lost or damaged?

A: $40

Q: What if I just want to text my mom?

A: We hope that students will be focused on their school work during the school day. If it is really necessary, you can come to the main office and we will help you get in touch with mom.

Q: Can I just keep my phone in my backpack?
A: No. That is our current system which is causing problems for students and teachers. This is why we are going to the Yondr Pouch.

Q: What can I use to tell time?

A: There are clocks in every classroom and office.

Q: Why do we need this policy when you get your phone taken away now?

A: We don’t want to spend valuable time taking students’ phones or asking them to put them away.

Q: What if I’m bored during break time?
A: I am confident we will all find better ways to cure boredom than the phone. And boredom can be a positive if you channel it into deep thought, creativity, or just giving your brain a break.

Q: Why can’t we have our phones at nutrition and lunch when they won’t disrupt classes?

A: We believe it is important for students to have time to socialize with friends without their phones. The phone has also been associated with safety issues. Eliminating phones has proven to make campuses safer.
